Endpoint Security Operations: Course Orientation
Introduction
This module is the orientation for SEC409. It establishes what the operations half of endpoint security actually is, what the course assumes about your estate, and the four ways this work fails, so that everything after it has somewhere concrete to land.
None of it requires you to change a setting. Every reading in this module can be taken with read access alone, which is deliberate: the first useful work on an inherited estate is establishing what is true rather than altering it, and that is also what earns the standing to alter it later.
How to get the most from this module
Read it in order. The sections build a single argument, and 0.11 assumes all ten before it, because the point of the worked week is recognizing failures you have already been introduced to rather than meeting them for the first time.
You do not need a tenant to read it, and you will get considerably more from it with one. Every section ends with readings you can take on your own estate, and none of them changes a setting: the whole module is establishing what is true rather than altering anything.
Nine of the eleven sections carry an interactive artifact to work through. Those are the practical core rather than decoration, and they are all real configurations, reports and records of the kind you will be handed rather than illustrations written to make a point.
Section 0.6 is the one to bookmark. It is the estate every module of this course works against, and you will come back to the roster in it more than anything else in the orientation.
What you will be able to do
Say which of the two endpoint jobs a given piece of work belongs to, and what it needs. Establish, with four readings and no permissions, whether your estate is reporting, retaining, applying policy and holding the roles this course assumes. Read a routing configuration and say for any question whether it is answerable, expensive or gone. Recognize a queue whose quiet comes from filtering rather than from the estate. Tell a detection that cannot fire from one that is correctly quiet. Read an intrusion made entirely of signed, legitimate binaries. State a detection time that describes the adversary rather than your own responsiveness. And name what your telemetry cannot see, in a paragraph you can hand to somebody else.
